Jesus wants to change the world through His church. As leaders of the church, we are called to not only love, lead, and shepherd people. But we are called to equip people.
For so many years in church planting my husband and I left off the last part. We spent our time leading people, and running the church, rather than equipping the church. I think some of us get this mindset as pastors, our only job is to lead, and take care of His sheep. However, Christ wants to change the world through the church, the people. And, we as leaders must understand part of leading is equipping the church to go change the world.
John 21: 15-17 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” (these meaning the other disciples) “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter denied Jesus 3x, and 3x Jesus asked Peter if He loved Him. He also 3x equipped Peter to go. Jesus loved Peter, lead Peter, and commissioned Peter into ministry. Pastoring a church isn't only about leading a church. The church isn't the building, or the Pastor. But the church is the people, and we have got to get better at equipping people to go. We sometimes let our expectations get the best of us, and expect people to be perfect in order to go and be Christ to the world. But we are all broken people covered in grace, called to change the world for His glory.
