Pastors' wives know first hand how glamorous and unglamorous leading a church can be. I have certainly over the years come across envy of the positions my husband and I have in the church. As I am sure you have. Usually from those who have never held the position of pastor's wife, or pastor. People who have looked at me though I have some sort of glamorous fame, that they envy. However, the fame they long for is not the glamour they perceive.
The glamour they see, is not the whole entirety of the role of a pastor's wife at all. What they see, is a woman who has a lot of eyes on her on a Sunday. A woman, who is part of the team with the leading man. A woman, who gets to lead an entire church with an important title. The first lady, if you will. But, being a pastor's wife is so much more than that. There is so much responsibility, dying to self, accountability, tough seasons, sacrifice, giving, loving, hurt, and pain that comes along with this beautiful title.
The pastor's wife's role is a whole lot more behind the scenes, than it is what a person sees on Sunday morning. We may have the greatest job in the world, but it is far from one to be envied. People have no idea the different seasons it has brought pastors' wives to get them where they are today. Many have walked difficult lonely roads, faithfully in the call for God to create in them and shape them to who you see today.
Pastors' wives are the strongest women I know. Their titles should never be insulted with envy. But with love, appreciation, and support.
