I can remember the beginning days of Forward Church. The time of core group meetings. This was the time before Sunday morning worship ever began. We use to meet in a tiny little house in Nashville, TN with a group of people to cast vision, become united under one purpose, and pray for the city God laid on our hearts. We use to dream, and have excitement for what God was doing among us and through the city.
Sunday mornings came quick after six months of core group meetings, and four months later we launched. Everything the first year was new, and exciting. We became a part of something bigger than ourselves, and saw people thrilled to jump along side of us and get behind something God was leading.
But after a while, the excitement started to fade. The new became old, and church became work. The weight of carrying a ministry started getting out of whack and we started to not rely on Jesus but ourselves with church finances, volunteers, growing the church, and we became talent based. We started driving this ship called Forward Church that was never our ship to drive.
Our talents at Forward could only get us so far, and only ever would. God didn't give us our talents to not keep him center. God doesn't need our talents to get glory, He can get glory with or without. However, in it all we got lost in carrying the weight and doing things on our own that we lost sight of being united together for one purpose, and doing it all for Jesus.
Church leaders, don't base your church off your talents. God doesn't need them. However, He did bless you with talents, so use them to glorify Him and take nothing for yourself. Base your church off of the dreams God gave you, and the vision and excitement from the beginning days. Never lose sight of it. Always dream so big only God can do it. Start scaring the enemy with your prayers again. Don't get lost in the weight and stress, but cast your burdens upon Jesus. Keep fanning the flame, and never let it die.
If you aren't as excited now as you were then during core group days, then something is wrong. Stop dreaming things you can do, and stop casting vision only you can accomplish. The church doest need you. The church needs Jesus, and what He and He alone can do. The church needs you to hide your flesh behind the cross daily, and to point them to Jesus.
Don't lose sight.
