When I was a child I use to love watching scary movies. Even though they scared the daylights out of me, I was addicted to watching them. I can remember having a lot of fear in my life then, and looking back I know where it came from.
When I got married my husband gave me a new perspective on scary movies. That perspective has carried over into every movie we watch. We don't watch any Rated R movies, movies with bad language, nudity, or story lines that are inappropriate. I know, I know sounds legalistic. Here me out and let me finish before you write me off.
The other day I was talking to a sweet friend and she was telling me how much she loves the show Dexter, and a couple other shows. If you haven't heard, Dexter is a show about him killing people. She went on to tell me, how if she ever wanted to kill anyone she knows exactly how to do so. Then, I went on to tell her that we don't watch shows or movies with killing, or nudity in it, and her response floored me. She said, "That is normal. Every movie or show you will find nudity in it. I said, well that is too bad, we will stick to our Rated G kid movies then.
Nudity, cursing, killing, cheating, stealing, and so on may be the "norm" in hollywood movies, and in society today. However, I am not called to a "normal" life. Ultimately, what I put in will come out. The bible says in Romans 12:2, do not conform to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Do you remember in high school the different "clicks." There were the jocks, preps, gothic kids, skater kids, dorky kids, and so on. The people we hung out with, we became like. Or how about the saying, "you are what you eat." If you eat healthy, you will be healthy, but if you eat garbage your body will eventually crash and your immune system will dissipate.
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things.
I do not ever want to live a normal life and think murder, infidelity, lying, stealing, and cursing are normal and acceptable to put in my mind. I can not be transformed by a renewing of my mind if what I am putting in is "normal" every day junk. I need to transform my mind like Philippians says, with whatever is excellent and praiseworthy.
Smart people are smart, because they read and fill themselves with wisdom. Movie buffs are buffs, because they watch a lot of movies. Xbox kids are awesome at it because they play games around the clock. Tan people are tan because they spend a lot of time tanning. You see where I am going.
Stop filling your minds with the "norm" and conforming to this world. Transform your minds with whatever is pure, and lovely. We are not called to normal lives, but we are called to a live a life set apart in Christ. Pastors' wives, we need to start filling our minds with Jesus and digging our hearts and minds in his word daily.
