A few years ago I was pregnant with my second and I was out to eat with my husband Jim and toddler Justus at a local mexican restaurant, called Rose Pepper. I was at the point in my pregnancy where I was obviously pregnant, no question about it. That night I happened to be craving a sugary drink, and I love mangos. Can you guess what I ordered? A virgin mango margarita, baby! Enjoying my margarita, and the few condescending looks I was getting, we carried on with our meal, not expecting what was going to happen next.
There was a nice looking couple sitting next to us, and by next to us, literally a foot from our table. The kind gentleman leaned over and said, I think I recognize you, are you a pastor? Too which Jim says yes, and carries on talking with him for the next fifteen minutes of our meal. You see Jim has that familiar face to everyone, and the gift of talking. Come to find out, he is a pastor too! Not only am I the pastor's wife drinking what appears to be a margarita full of alcohol with salt sprinkled all over the rim of the glass, I am carrying on doing it pregnant and I have been caught doing it by a fellow pastor and pastor's wife! Oh my word. It was never brought up or mentioned, but I felt ashamed that what was an innocent pregnancy craving was now viewed as a pastor's wife selfishly drinking a drink that was harming her unborn baby.
A lot of times as women in ministry we are held to a different standard than everyone around us. As wrong and unfortunate as it is, people don't want to see or hear our struggles. And they definitely don't want to see us drinking a margarita pregnant. They want us to be a little more perfect, and a little more holier than though so to speak, so they can accept us into the position we are in. But really, you and I both know it, we struggle, sin, and have our moments just like everyone else.
Being a wife of a pastor I know you have probably been there! You have had an awkward moment in ministry where it all collides, and who you are is jumbled up in a title. Today, on this Friday if you have a story of something similar that has happened to you, feel free to post it below, or on the I Sleep With The Pastor Facebook page, so we pastors' wives can all get a good laugh!
